There's a category of pilot at every regional race — the ones who seem weirdly calm, who warm up methodically, who don't scramble when the marshal calls five minutes. These aren't just naturally gifted fliers. A lot of them are following routines they've built and refined over dozens of events. And those routines, it turns out, are doing real work.
The Psychology Behind the Ritual
Sports psychology has studied pre-performance routines for decades across everything from golf to Olympic sprinting, and the findings are pretty consistent: structured pre-competition behavior reduces decision fatigue, narrows attentional focus, and lowers cortisol levels before high-stakes moments. For FPV racing — a sport that demands split-second spatial judgment, precise throttle input, and sustained concentration across multiple heats — those benefits translate directly to lap times.
Mike Tran, a regional competitor out of the Dallas-Fort Worth area who's been on the podium at three consecutive Texas Invitational events, describes his pre-race window as "almost meditative." He arrives at the venue ninety minutes before his first heat, not because he needs that long to set up hardware, but because he uses the extra time to walk the course physically before ever putting on goggles.
"I'm looking at gate angles, measuring sight lines in my head, figuring out where I'm going to set up my braking points," he says. "By the time I'm in the pilot box, I've already flown that course a hundred times in my brain."
This kind of mental pre-flight isn't unique to Tran. It shows up across elite FPV pilots with surprising consistency — even among those who've never formally studied sports psychology.
Goggle Calibration Isn't Just Technical — It's Mental
A lot of pilots treat goggle calibration as a purely technical step: power on, check video feed, confirm channel, done. But several top competitors describe their calibration sequence as a deliberate sensory anchoring routine — a way of transitioning their brain from the chaos of the pit area into a focused, race-ready state.
Jess Morales, who races out of Southern California and consistently qualifies in the top five at SoCal regional events, has a specific sequence she runs every single time. She powers her goggles, lets the video feed stabilize for a full thirty seconds without touching anything, then makes minor IPD and focus adjustments even if she didn't change anything since her last race.
"It's not that the settings actually need adjusting every time," she admits. "It's that going through those motions tells my brain we're doing this now. It's a transition. After I do it, I feel locked in."
Neuroscience actually supports what Morales is describing. Ritualized, sequential behavior activates the brain's procedural memory systems and can serve as an effective "state-change trigger" — essentially a mental on-ramp that shifts cognitive mode from ambient awareness to task-focused performance.
The Warmup Flight: More Than Shaking Off Rust
Almost every competitive pilot does some kind of warmup flight before racing. But the quality and structure of that warmup varies enormously — and that variance seems to matter.

Lucky hats, specific playlists, pre-race snacks — these rituals carry real psychological comfort, but their performance benefit is mostly placebo. That's not nothing — confidence matters — but it's not the same as a technically grounded preparation habit.
The rituals that consistently show up in the routines of pilots with the best results tend to share a few traits: they're repeatable regardless of venue, they involve some form of deliberate mental transition, and they include at least one technical verification step that catches real problems before the race rather than during it.
That last point is underrated. Multiple pilots described catching actual hardware issues — a loose motor screw, a video transmitter running warm, a prop with a small chip — during their structured pre-race checks that they might have missed in a rushed setup. In a sport where a single mechanical failure ends your heat, that kind of systematic verification isn't just ritual. It's risk management.
Building Your Own Pre-Race Protocol
There's no universal checklist that works for every pilot. Personality, experience level, and hardware setup all factor in. But if you're looking to build a more intentional pre-race routine, the pilots we talked to offered a few consistent recommendations.
First, give yourself more time than you think you need. Rushing your setup is one of the fastest ways to arrive at the pilot box in the wrong mental state. Third, build a consistent calibration or hardware check sequence and run it the same way every time, at every event.
And finally: end your warmup with something you do well. The last thing your brain processes before you race is the thing it'll default to under pressure. Make it a clean gate, a smooth corner, a confident throttle punch. Give yourself something good to carry into the heat.
The pilots who win consistently aren't just faster. They're more prepared. And preparation, it turns out, is something you can actually practice.
